Club History

Fylde Hockey Club was established in 2016 and was previously known as Springfields Hockey Club. The club started life in the early 1960s as the British Nuclear Fuels Limited, Springfields site, men’s team.  The ladies section was formed from the N.A.L.G.O. women’s team who were mainly employed at County Hall in Preston. These players moved en mass to Springfields, taking on their colours of gold and black, and enjoyed the excellent facilities at the Lea sports ground, which is now owned by Preston North End F.C.

In 1990 Springfields Hockey Club was one of the forerunners in the area to move away from playing on grass pitches. Home fixtures were played over 15 miles away at Stanley Park, Blackpool and then the club moved back to Preston when the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) opened the Sports Arena complex at Cottam in 2000.

In 2016, with the promise of an Olympic-standard pitch, 200-seat spectator stand and clubhouse facilities, the club was renamed. We are now linked to AFC Fylde and the Mill Farm Sports Village developments. Club colours and playing kit were also updated and  we moved to Mill Farm for the 2017/18 season.

Fylde Hockey Club is a fully integrated mixed club where the men, women and juniors are represented in the organisational structure. We have a loyal and dedicated coaching team and umpire base, and also have representation on committees of local and regional hockey organisations.  Fylde Hockey Club has always maintained strong, stable leadership with dedicated business professionals setting the highest standards for club development.

The Club has seven senior teams: one men’s and six women’s, together with a flourishing junior section. Fylde Girls U18’s were North Indoor Champions in 2017. Junior coaching and player development has been a feature of the Club for over 35 years and we enter competitive teams in England Hockey, North West and Lancashire junior competitions.

The Ladies’ 1st Team qualified for the inaugural North Ladies’ Hockey League in the 1989/90 season.

In the 2016/17 season the Ladies’ 1st Team became North Champions, for the fourth time in nine years, returning to the EH National League for the 2017/8 season. (North Champions: 2007/8; 2009/10; 2014/15; 2016/17).

For the 2021/22 season England Hockey re-organised the National and Regional league structures, disbanding the North Region and creating a new England Hockey National League with eight Regional leagues.
